Our Mission

Melinda Houghton founded and ran “Houghton Strategic Solutions – Financial Planning for Real People” for 8 years after many years in various other finance roles and other practices. The demand for down-to earth advice with integrity was overwhelming, however finding suitable advisers to assist proved impossible. The legislative burden became ridiculous, and made provision of advice to “everyday people” expensive, time-consuming and difficult.

Melinda still wanted to achieve her goal of helping the people who need it most benefit from quality financial advice, however the family/business juggle of children and ageing parents meant the end of Houghton Strategic Solutions was inevitable, however this has also led to another service that should achieve the same goals of more advice for more people.

I am no longer authorised to provide financial advice, and will not do so. I will work with you (and your chosen adviser if you wish) to bridge the gap between their specialist knowledge and skills and your understanding and trust.

It’s kind of like a pre-purchase inspection for your car or house, but it’s for the most important things of all – your own and your family’s financial future, and your financial relaxation.

Real Estate has buyer’s advocates, Lending has mortgage brokers, and the Law has Solicitors. Traditionally Financial Advice has had commentary by your parents, the taxi-driver, or a chat around the BBQ. You now have someone who has been on the inside, to work on your side. Someone with over 25 years’ experience in the finance industry, and 15 years as a financial adviser to help you wade through the jargon and possible vested interests to get the best from your advice more quickly and efficiently (which means more cost-effectively).

Who are our customers? 

Most people come to us because they’re just not sure what to do.

They might be confused about where to start with seeking financial advice, how to know what the best option is for them or how to know who to trust.

Many people aren’t even sure if they should be looking for a broker, advisor, accountant or any number of professionals.

This is where we can help. 


We can answer

  • I saw someone once and asked about Superannuation, and the adviser talked about other stuff like Life Insurance, why?
  • I have seen really bad stories in the paper or on the television, about financial advice only making financial advisers and banks rich.
  • I want my financial issues to just solve themselves, and don’t really want to think about it, let alone own up to any mistakes, it is all too hard.
  • I can just google it, surely?
  • I have an adviser already, but don’t really understand what they are doing for them.

All of these points are perfectly valid, but the solutions will vary for everyone. However, like having to go to the dentist when your tooth hurts, the problem won’t go away if you don’t face up and sit in the chair.

We have financial intermediaries that can help you with the products; like insurance agents, financial advisers/planners, mortgage brokers, accountants, stockbrokers, even lawyers and yes, the banks.

We have strategists that can help you to get information on things you need that aren’t necessarily products, such as budgets, tax minimisation, types of insurance, types of loans, ways of investing, superannuation contributions, debt reduction etc.

But the system is complex, and can be expensive. And many people are totally confused about who does which bit? Or who you can trust? Or how does it work?

So, you could make a guess, and go to someone only to find it is the wrong service, or they are just selling a product, or they cost more than you thought, or you don’t know what on earth they are talking about.

This service is new, but provided by someone with over 25 years of finance experience and 15 years as a financial adviser. Someone who has been on the inside and decided to work with consumers directly on the outside – Melinda Houghton of Insider Out – Understand and Trust your Advice. 

Melinda has worked in roles in management, administration and finance. She has worked in Australian and International Banks, Insurance companies, large and small financial planning businesses under 5 different Licensees, and built her own business from the ground up. She has many years of experience and won many awards in her business.

But most importantly Melinda has always focused on her own personal goals of helping everyday people achieve financial relaxation. It was this focus that allowed her to work on getting more advice to more people; not just try to work with clients who had already had advice elsewhere.

It is this focus that has now led to Melinda recognising this missing puzzle piece, and to start a business that helps the people who aren’t quite ready to seek advice, or who have attempted the puzzle but not quite finished it.
